White River System: Small male white bass are being caught on the upper White east of Fayetteville and some larger females are being caught if you know where to fish for them. Don’t be surprised if you land some walleye as well as they are spawning. Clouser’s, Jiggies, Bunnies, Crazy Dad’s and Zonkers in various colors are all working well. I’ve been fishing patterns with the Fish Skull Heads and they are working well also. Chart./White, Olive/White, Tan/White and Olive/Yellow are color combos that are working well for minnow patterns and shades of olive and brown with some orange for your crawdad patterns.

Beaver: Plenty of low water with little generation has provided wade fisherman plenty of opportunities to fish. Midges, sow bugs and scuds in that order are producing depending on the day. Try small streamers early and late or on overcast and/or windy days or if the fish don’t seem to be responding to dead-drifted nymphs. Zebra midges in olive, black, gray or brown, sizes 18-22, KC’s Sow Bug, Ray Charles Sow Bug or Simple Sow in tan or gray, sizes 12-16, KC’s Swimming Scud and Humpback Scud in tan, olive or gray, sizes 12-16. Slumpbuster, Sparrow, .56er and Wooly Bugger in olive, black or gray, sizes 8-12. Some reports of white bass around the Houseman Access.

Bull Shoals: Fishing has been excellent on all sections of the river with many browns 17-20 inches being caught along with feisty fat rainbows up to 16 inches. Some caddis are being seen around the Narrows, Wildcat, Round House and Rim Shoals area but the best hatches are still taking place well down river from Buffalo Shoal to Red’s Landing. As the weather warms the caddis hatches will start moving upriver in the next couple of weeks. Midge and sow bug patterns are working best at the catch and release area at the dam. Add scud, caddis larva/pupa, worm and medium size streamer patterns for the mid and lower sections from White Hole to Rim Shoals. For the lower sections from Buffalo Shoal to Red’s Landing add elk hair caddis and soft hackle/pupa droppers during hatches. Some of my favorite caddis patterns are old school; Prince Nymph, Zug Bug, Hare & Copper Olive, Partridge/Green Soft Hackle, Elk Hair Caddis and new school; Z-Wing Caddis, Barr’s Caddis Larva, Barr’s Graphic Caddis and Pearl and Elk, all in sizes 12-16.

Nofork: Very little generation for the past several months has allowed algae to really bloom but the fishing continues to be good. Still not much caddis action happening but a few are being seen on warmer days. Midge, scud, sow bug, worm and small to medium size streamer patterns are working well at various times of the day.

Well, we’ve had two major snow events in the last two weeks. The second storm produced record breaking snow acumullations of up to two feet here in Fayetteville, AR! To maintain sanity during these snowpocalypes, I’ve been tying white bass flies and recollecting 50+ fish days of seasons past. I always tie some new patterns for whities every year and this year I’m diggin’ the Collier’s Gizmo Bugger and I’m adding the relatively new ‘Fish Skull’ heads to my KC’s Slider as well as a few standard patterns. These heads slide over the eye of the hook so they can be adapted to almost any streamer style fly. I can’t wait to try them out on white bass, as well as smallmouth, trout, stripers and largemouth. If you’ve never caught white bass on the fly you’re definitely missing out, so give me a holler and let me show you how and where, I know you’ll love it! The season is just around the corner!
